The Merc was started in 1974 by a group of Lawrence residents and opened its first storefront in 1975. Its store at 901 Iowa Street sells groceries with an emphasis on local producers, and has a deli, cafe, bakery and catering. It also runs community classes in its teaching kitchen and is owned by its members.
