Reiki: a plain-language guide
Reiki is a gentle Japanese energy practice. A practitioner rests their hands lightly on or just above the body, usually while you lie fully clothed, with the aim of encouraging deep relaxation and a sense of balance.
What a session is like
Most sessions last 45 to 90 minutes. You stay dressed, the room is usually quiet or softly lit, and the practitioner moves through a series of hand positions from head to feet. Many people feel warmth, tingling or simply very relaxed. Distance (remote) Reiki is offered online by practitioners trained in Level 2 or higher.
Why people book it
People often book Reiki to unwind, to feel calmer during a stressful season, or as a quiet reset alongside other care.
How to choose someone
- Look at their training level: Level 1, Level 2 or Reiki Master (the level that can also teach).
- Ask whether they offer in-person, distance sessions, or both.
- Read reviews for how people felt during and after their session.
Questions
Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to work?
No belief is required. Many people come simply to rest; you can notice how you feel and decide for yourself.
What's the difference between Reiki levels?
Level 1 covers hands-on techniques, Level 2 adds symbols and distance sessions, and Reiki Master is the highest level, which can also teach and attune students.
Is Reiki a replacement for medical care?
No. Reiki is a complementary practice. Keep seeing your doctor or therapist for any health concern.
