Yoga: a plain-language guide
Yoga combines movement, breath and attention. Studios offer many styles: flowing vinyasa, heated hot yoga, slow yin and restorative, alignment-focused Iyengar, Kundalini and yoga nidra (guided deep rest).
What a session is like
Classes typically last 60 to 75 minutes and end with a few minutes of rest. Studios usually provide mats and props; arrive a little early for your first class.
Why people book it
People often practice yoga for strength, flexibility, stress relief and community.
How to choose someone
- Beginners do well in 'gentle', 'foundations' or 'level 1' classes.
- Restorative, yin and yoga nidra are slow and quiet; vinyasa and hot yoga are more vigorous.
- Look for new-student intro offers.
Questions
Do I need to be flexible?
Not at all. Flexibility comes with practice.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, stretchy clothes. Most classes are barefoot.
Is hot yoga safe?
Many people enjoy it, but drink water and avoid it if you're pregnant or have heat-sensitive conditions unless your doctor says it's fine.
