Counseling: a plain-language guide
Counselors and psychotherapists are licensed mental-health professionals (for example LMFT, LCSW, LPC or psychologists). Holistic therapists may also bring in mindfulness, somatic or body-based approaches.
What a session is like
Sessions are usually 50 minutes, weekly at first, in person or online. The first appointments focus on understanding what brings you in.
Why people book it
People see a therapist for anxiety, depression, grief, relationships, trauma, life transitions or simply to understand themselves better.
How to choose someone
- Make sure they're licensed in your state.
- Look for experience with what you're facing, and approaches you're curious about (for example EMDR or somatic therapy).
- It's normal to try a couple of therapists before finding the right fit.
